Winterize the exterior of your home like this, and you’ll be ready for impending bad weather. From the roof to the basement, these are the items to focus on to keep the warm in and the cold out.
Start at the top by getting a roof inspection. Look for damage that might result in leaks now, to prevent the worst later. Then, check downspouts and gutters for debris and leaks. Make sure downspouts drain far away from the foundation of your home.
Next, inspect your windows by checking the caulking. Is it cracked or missing? Seal off drafts and leaks with repair caulk. And apply weatherstripping around windows AND doors to create a better seal, keeping warmth inside. Add extra protection with window film, shades, or heavy curtains on windows.
While you’re outside, drain and disconnect garden hoses and cover faucets. Covered exposed pipes. Fully drain and shut off your sprinkler system to prevent it from freezing and breaking. Check your driveway and walkways for cracks and repair them. Keep them swept of debris to prevent hazards in snow and ice.
Finally, check your outdoor landscaping. Trim shrubs and tree limbs to prevent dead branches from falling once covered with ice. Add a layer of mulch to protect your garden beds and cover temperature sensitive plants to protect them from the cold. Cover outdoor furniture and grills to protect them from damage during the winter and bring other smaller outdoor accessories inside.
